I believe AAA4 batteries are rechargeable like nicad batteries. They also only produce 1.2 volts as opposed to 1.5 volts produced by regular alkaline batteries. They shoulkd be interchangeable in many cases but due to the lower voltage output they will not last as long before needing to be recharged.
